American cinnamon rolls are sweet rolled buns filled with cinnamon and sugar. The traditional recipe uses yeast and several hours of rising; this express version uses baking powder, so they’re ready in about 30 minutes.

Express American cinnamon rolls
- 9 ingredients
- 12 steps
Ingredients
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 9 g baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 45 g cold butter, for the dough
- 180 ml milk
- 50 g sugar
- 30 g melted butter, for the filling
- 50 g brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Step-by-step preparation
- Preheat the oven to 200 °C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
- Add the cold butter in cubes and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like coarse sand.
- Pour in the milk gradually and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for just 1 or 2 minutes, until smooth.
- Roll it out into a rectangle about 0.5 cm thick.
- Brush the surface with the melted butter, leaving a small border.
- Mix the brown sugar with the cinnamon and sprinkle it evenly over the dough.
- Roll the dough up tightly, starting from a long side, to form a log.
- Cut into slices about 2.5 cm thick and place them on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden and puffed.
- Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
For the glaze, mix 80 g powdered sugar with 1 or 2 tablespoons of milk and a few drops of vanilla until smooth, and drizzle it over the rolls while they’re still warm.
