Quick medialunas or croissants

  • 9 ingredients
  • 12 steps

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup cold butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup cold milk
  • 1 beaten egg, for brushing
  • Powdered sugar, to decorate

Step-by-step preparation

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and yeast.
  2. Add the cold butter and work it in with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until coarse crumbs form.
  3. Add the cold water and milk and mix well until a soft, elastic dough forms.
  4. Put the dough in a large bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C). On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 0.5 cm thick.
  6. Cut the dough into triangles about 10–15 cm wide at the base.
  7. Roll each triangle up from the base to the tip to form the medialunas or croissants.
  8. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Brush each one with beaten egg.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15–20 minutes, until golden and crisp outside and soft inside.
  11. Take them out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.

These medialunas or croissants are perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Their flaky texture and buttery flavor make them irresistible.
