Caramel sauce

  • 5 ingredients
  • 6 steps

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Step-by-step preparation

  1. Put the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. Let it boil without stirring until it turns a deep amber color. If crystals start to form, swirl the pan gently or stir carefully with a wooden spoon.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and add the cream and butter. Stir well until the butter has completely melted.
  4. Add the vanilla extract, if using, and stir well.
  5. Let the caramel sauce cool to room temperature before using. It keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.
  6. Use the caramel sauce to top your favorite desserts: pour it over ice cream, tarts, cakes or crêpes, or use it as a dip for fruit or cookies.

Extra tips

  • Be careful when handling hot caramel, as it can cause burns. Use heat-resistant utensils and oven mitts if needed.
  • Don’t overheat the caramel, as it can burn and ruin the flavor.
  • If the sauce isn’t thick enough, return it to low heat and simmer gently until it thickens.
  • If the caramel sauce hardens in the fridge, warm it gently in the microwave or in a pan over low heat to loosen it.

And that’s it! Now you know how to make a delicious caramel sauce for your favorite desserts. Enjoy!
