Oven-baked Spanish torrijas

  • 8 ingredients
  • 9 steps

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of torrija bread or slightly stale sandwich bread
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip of lemon peel
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Step-by-step preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C).
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk with the cinnamon stick and lemon peel until it boils. Remove from the heat and let it cool.
  3. In a bowl, beat the egg with the honey and salt.
  4. Soak each slice of bread in the warm milk for a few seconds, until well soaked.
  5. Place the slices on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Brush the slices with the egg and honey mixture.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15–20 minutes, until the torrijas are golden and crisp outside and soft inside.
  8. Take the torrijas out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  9. Serve warm, drizzled with a little honey or dusted with ground cinnamon, if you like.

These oven-baked torrijas are a lighter alternative to the traditional fried version and just as delicious. The oven makes them crisp and golden without the extra oil.
